Silent Film with Live Music: The Scarlet Letter
Join us on Tuesday, October 6 at 6:00 PM for the screening at the library of the 1926 silent film adaptation of The Scarlet Letter, featuring live music by musician and silent film aficionado, Jeff Rapsis.
About the Film
Getting this movie to the screen was a battle in itself. Hollywood executives initially feared Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story of a Puritan woman branded for adultery would deeply offend 1920s audiences. However, legendary actress Lillian Gish fought censorship boards to greenlight the project. Her powerful, empathetic performance as Hester Prynne turned the film into a massive critical and commercial success.
The Live Music Experience
Before talking pictures, live music was the heartbeat of cinema. Jeff Rapsis will recreate that magic by improvising a live score to follow the film. Because the music responds directly to the audience and the screen, this will be a completely one-of-a-kind performance.
This program is made possible by the generous funding of the Friends of the Moultonborough Library.
