Protecting Yourself against Cyber Crime
We were fortunate enough to have the Meredith Village Savings Bank come to the library on September 11 and talk to us about protecting ourselves against bank fraud. They covered the most common types of scams, and gave us some practical strategies for protecting ourselves, including my favorite, if you only bank online, go meet the staff at your local bank so you can put a face to your app.
A few other practical tips from the presentation were:
- Fraud does not discriminate. It CAN happen to you.
- If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is.
- If you receive an email or text from an unknown vendor, do not call the number listed. Get the business’s contact information from their website and verify the call.
- Hang up. Do not engage the scammer.
Did you miss the presentation? No worries. We have another fraud prevention presentation on October 30, 6 to 7 pm, with the AARP – “The Scam Landscape: Staying Safe” and a special guest from the Moultonborough Police Department. Register here.
The AARP will share the latest information on current fraud trends and providing proven tools to help you and your family spot and gracefully sidestep identity theft and scams that are unfortunately so common today.
By attending, you’ll gain practical, easy-to-implement knowledge that can make a real difference in protecting your assets. We will explore key topics, including how to easily identify common scams, what subtle tactics criminals use to target people, and most importantly, what steps to take if you or a loved one suspects fraud.
