Library History
The Moultonborough Public Library was established in 1897. The library was first housed in the Old Country Store in a 12’ X 12’ upstairs room. The first title listed in the accession book was “Little Men,” by Louisa May Alcott. In 1917, the library moved to the Knight of Pythias Hall, in a ground-floor room on the left, heated with wood. This large building stood where the Foss Agency is currently located. In 1929, residents at town meeting approved plans for a new library building on the site where it still resides today.
In 1997 the library celebrated one hundred years of service to the community. To document the history of our first century, then assistant librarian Jane Rice compiled a history of the library, which is available to read at the library. Click here to read a brief version of the library’s history.
