Three Days at Gettysburg

Scholar Mike McKinley

In July 1863, over 150,000 Union and Confederate soldiers converged on the small crossroads town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. From July 1-3, General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and General George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac clashed there in what was to become the greatest battle ever fought on North American soil.

This program will present the battle through the personal accounts and human interest stories of the soldiers and civilians - men, women, and children - who participated in or witnessed the events of those three memorable days.  The program will also highlight Lee's retreat; how Gettysburg citizens coped with the terrible aftermath of battle; and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

White Mountain Art, History, & Nature: A Tour of the Notches

 with Bob Cottrell

Did you know the White Mountains have attracted tourists and artists since the early 1800s? Come take an arm-chair tour of the White Mountain notches through 19th century paintings, photographs and postcards with Bob Cottrell and his program.

Hear about the legend of Chocorua and the true story behind the Willey Slide. Explore the historic relationship between people and nature through the paintings, literature, and poetry in the White Mountain tradition. Follow in the footsteps of artists over the past two centuries such as Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt and Benjamin Champney.

This program will look at the history and nature behind the art, the geological formations that attracted the artists, waterfalls, flora and fauna, and the tools and techniques they used in their paintings, drawings, and prints, and the history they captured in their work such as farm and village life.

Bob Cottrell is the curator of the Henney History Room at the Conway Public Library.

Andersonville: 26 Acres of Hell

Scholar Mike McKinley

Union Private Lucius Barber was a prisoner of war at the Confederate military prison at Andersonville, Georgia. According to Barber, when he arrived there in 1864, the "...huge doors swung open to admit us and we were in the presence of ...human beings...that  more than resembled walking skeletons...Such squalid, filthy, wretchedness, hunger, disease, nakedness and cold, I never saw before."

Although none of the military prisons in the North or the South had a monopoly on the inhumane treatment of prisoners during the Civil War, Andersonville was the most notorious. 45,000 Union servicemen were incarcerated within its walls during the camp's 14-month existence.  13,000 would never return home.  This program will describe the conditions and relate the experiences of the POWs held there

The Quotable Edison
by Michele Albion

Thomas Edison was the "Wizard of Menlo Park."
A prolific inventor and holder of numerous patents, he was also called a "magician," "the Napoleon of Science," and the "Inventor of the Age." But he was also a practical joker, a self-made man with a certain disdain for polite society, an ambitious explorer, and a public intellectual.

The Quotable Edison offers a wealth of his insightful, enlightening, and sometimes humorous comments and witticisms on a wide range of subjects, from business to politics, from religion to nutrition, from advice to boys to opinions on women’s clothing.

Famous for his dictum that "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration," Edison offered many other gems.

Author Michele Wehrwein Albion, curator of the Edison and Ford Winter Estates from 1992 to 1997 and former curatorial staff at the United States Holocaust Museum, is the author of The Florida Life of Thomas Edison. She lives in Dover, New Hampshire

Meredith Chronicles
Passing Time on Lake Winnipesaukee
with
Local Author
Dan Heyduk

Meredith had land speculators, hardy farmers, famous   artists, industrialists and mill workers, traders, tourists, summer campers, an almanac-writer and a hermit. There were taxes on cider - but not on houses, and sheep briefly outnumbered people. Meredith women emerged to work in the mills, to teach in the one-room schools, to hold property, and eventually - to vote. Contending railroads launched competing steamboats on Lake Winnipesaukee, and some boats were official U.S. post offices. Summer hotels and this country's first children's camps appeared. Bands played music for militia musters and temperance rallies. A livery stable made way for a library. Villages grew from water power and to serve the needs of farmers, but then the town split in two and farms were abandoned. Old Home Week and a winter carnival helped to heal the wounds.

"Meredith Chronicles" tells this story of historical twists and turns by looking at how people responded, and how the people themselves made changes.

Dan writes a weekly column about local history for the Meredith News.

Presented by Darryl Thompson

In their more than two and a half centuries of existence, members of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, commonly known as Shakers, made ingenious contributions to diverse fields: agriculture, industry, medicine, music, furniture design, women's rights, racial equality, craftsmanship, social and religious thought, and mechanical invention and improvement. Darryl Thompson explores some of these contributions in his lecture and shares some of his personal memories of the Canterbury Shakers.
